Does decaf coffee have caffeine? Usually, a small amount can remain. Decaf does not mean that the coffee bean originally contained no caffeine; it means that most of the caffeine was removed before roasting. The amount that remains depends on the coffee, the decaffeination method and the serving you brew.

How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?

There is no single answer for every decaf coffee. The result depends on the green coffee, the process used to remove caffeine, the dose and the brew method. A larger or stronger serving can contain more caffeine than a small serving made with the same beans.

That is why the most honest answer is: yes, decaf coffee can still contain a small amount of caffeine, but far less than the comparable regular coffee. If you have to avoid caffeine completely, check the product information and ask the supplier how the coffee was decaffeinated.

Why can caffeine remain?

Caffeine is naturally part of the green coffee bean. During decaffeination, the beans are treated so caffeine can move out of the bean. The process is designed to reduce caffeine very strongly, but it is not the same as starting with a naturally caffeine-free seed.

Swiss Water Decaf uses water, temperature, time and Green Coffee Extract. Caffeine is drawn out of the beans and the extract is filtered through carbon filters that retain caffeine. The extract is then circulated again. Read our Swiss Water guide for the full process.

Sugar Cane Decaf uses ethyl acetate associated with sugarcane. The beans are steamed, treated repeatedly and dried before roasting. Read our Sugar Cane guide to understand what that name means.

Does the brewing method change the caffeine level?

The decaf method is only one part of the picture. The amount of coffee you use, the drink size and the extraction method also influence the amount in your cup. A large filter brew, a double espresso and a small coffee prepared with a bean-to-cup machine are not equivalent servings.

Do not use a darker roast or a longer extraction as a shortcut to “more decaf”. The sensible approach is to choose a coffee with clear product information, use a consistent dose and brew it for the flavour you want.

Can decaf still taste like real coffee?

Absolutely. Caffeine is not the same thing as flavour. The taste comes from the green coffee, its origin, variety and processing, the decaffeination method, the roast and the extraction. A high-quality decaf can be sweet, full and balanced.

That is why our decaf coffees are not positioned as a compromise. The Eddy’s Coffee decaf selection is chosen for flavour as well as for the way caffeine is removed. You can use the beans for espresso, cappuccino, filter coffee or a bean-to-cup machine.

What should you look for when buying decaf?

Start with transparency. Look for a named decaffeination method, clear product information, a roast date or freshness promise and a flavour profile that matches the way you brew. If a product only says “caffeine-free” without explaining the process, you still do not know what you are buying.

So, does decaf coffee have caffeine? It can contain a small residual amount. But that does not make it a lesser coffee. Choose a well-made decaf, brew it carefully and judge it by the cup: sweetness, body, balance and finish.
