How to Store Coffee Beans

How to Store Coffee Beans

Freshly roasted coffee beans deserve more than an opened bag on the kitchen counter. Once oxygen, moisture, light and surrounding odours reach the beans, aroma and flavour gradually become less stable. As a barista, I see good storage as part of the brewing process: the way you store the coffee determines how consistently it tastes from one cup to the next.

At Eddy’s Coffee we roast fresh coffee beans and use CoffeeVac canisters for practical, airtight storage at home, in the office or in a professional coffee bar. This guide explains what a coffee canister does, which size fits your routine, and how to combine a 1 kg canister with the original bag and a coffee clip.

Why coffee beans lose quality after opening

Roasted coffee contains volatile aromas. Every time a bag is opened, fresh air reaches the beans. Heat, light, humidity and strong kitchen smells can accelerate the loss of flavour. Refrigerators are not a good solution: condensation and odours can affect the beans. Buy an amount you will drink within a reasonable period, close the storage container immediately after dosing and keep it at room temperature in a dry, dark place.

What makes a CoffeeVac useful?

A CoffeeVac combines an airtight closure with a one-way valve. The valve allows gas released by freshly roasted beans to escape while the closed canister limits new oxygen entering. The result is a simple daily routine: take the amount you need, close the canister and keep the rest protected. A canister cannot make old coffee fresh again, but it can prevent freshly roasted coffee from deteriorating unnecessarily quickly.

Choose the right size

SizePractical use
250gA small daily supply, espresso and decaf kept separately
460gA slim medium size for a moderate supply
500gA straightforward choice for about half a kilogram
880gA large loose-bean supply for frequent use
1kgA full kilo bag, including the original packaging
Pump 250gAbout 250g when you want to remove extra air manually

The 1 kg CoffeeVac and the original bag

The 1 kg CoffeeVac is especially useful when you buy a full bag. After filling your machine’s reservoir, place the opened bag upright inside the canister, fold the open part inwards and close the bag with a coffee clip. Then close the CoffeeVac. The packaging stays with the coffee, so the origin, roast date and flavour information are not lost, and you do not need to transfer the beans or leave residue in the canister.

Daily storage routine

  1. Choose a canister that matches the amount you actually keep open.
  2. Store the beans loose, or place the opened bag inside the 1 kg model.
  3. Close the lid immediately after taking coffee out.
  4. Keep the canister cool, dry and dark at room temperature.
  5. Grind only the amount you need for the brew.
  6. Wash and fully dry the canister before changing coffee.

Standard CoffeeVac or Pump?

The standard CoffeeVac is the calm, low-effort choice for everyday storage. The 0.8-litre Pump adds a manual pump: close the lid, pump a few times if you want to remove extra air, and press the release button before opening. It works without batteries or electricity and also seals airtight without pumping.

Cleaning

Empty the canister, wash it with mild soapy water and dry it completely with a clean tea towel. Do not use a dishwasher or microwave. Only refill when the inside, lid and sealing edge are dry.
