What are Colombian Single Origin coffee beans?

Colombia Single Origin means that this coffee comes from one clearly defined origin rather than a blend of different countries or regions. This lot comes from Finca La Morelia in Colombia. Read our explanation of Single Origin coffee beans if you would like to understand the difference from blends.

As a barista, I find Single Origin especially interesting because you can follow the origin more clearly. You are not only tasting a roast profile; you can also understand the region, producer, variety and processing behind the cup. With this Colombian coffee, those details come together in a creamy, full coffee with a sweet finish.

The origin: Belén de Umbría in Risaralda

Finca La Morelia is located in the municipality of Belén de Umbría, in Risaralda, in the heart of Colombia's coffee-growing region. The farm lies at approximately 1,600 metres above sea level in the mountainous Andes landscape. At this altitude, the coffee cherries develop slowly and evenly. This gives the producer time to select ripe cherries carefully and process the coffee with attention.

Belén de Umbría is more than a place name on a coffee bag. It is an area where coffee production, family farms and agriculture are closely connected. Would you like to learn more about this area? Read our article about Belén de Umbría and Risaralda.

Finca La Morelia: a family farm

The farm covers approximately eight hectares. Around five hectares are used for coffee; the remaining land is used for crops including bananas, tomatoes and cassava. This makes La Morelia a mixed family farm in which coffee is part of a broader agricultural business. The coffee is therefore not separate from the landscape and other crops, but part of a way of working that connects several activities.

Producer Abel Cardona runs Finca La Morelia with his wife and four children. He represents the third generation of his family to grow coffee in this region. His grandparents moved to Colombia's coffee-growing region almost a century ago. The family's knowledge and care for coffee have therefore been passed down through the generations.

Direct Trade and working with Origin Bridge

This coffee is sourced together with Origin Bridge through a Direct Trade approach. The relationship pays attention to a fair price for the producer and to the continuity of the family farm. A fairer price creates room to invest in the plantation, quality and the future of the next generation.

That does not mean that the words Direct Trade alone prove every flavour or sustainability claim. It does mean that the sourcing relationship and the producer are a clearer part of the story behind this coffee. For us as a roaster and for you as a coffee drinker, that is valuable origin information.

How does Colombia Single Origin taste?

This Colombian coffee has a creamy body and a full, sweet finish. With a medium roast, the main notes are chocolate, brown sugar and hazelnut. Its character is intense but rounded: strong enough for espresso, yet smooth enough to enjoy as a lungo, filter coffee or cappuccino.

The SCA score of 85 places this coffee within the specialty segment. The Castillo variety, altitude and washed processing contribute to a clear and recognisable profile. The final taste is also influenced by your roast, grind, water, dose and machine. The same coffee can therefore taste fuller and sweeter in one preparation and sharper or more bitter in another.

What do coffee drinkers experience with this coffee?

The review analysis we compiled for this coffee shows a clear positive pattern. Coffee drinkers appreciate its full, creamy and sweet impression and often mention it as suitable for espresso, cappuccino, lungo and moka pot. Some users also see it as an approachable all-rounder when they use several brewing methods at home.

There is also an important second pattern. Some tasters experience bitterness, acidity or a burnt impression when their espresso machine is not adjusted to the coffee. Others prefer it as filter coffee rather than espresso. This does not automatically mean that the coffee is lower quality. It mainly shows that, like any specialty coffee, this bean reacts to grind, extraction time, ratio, temperature and the characteristics of your machine.

Colombia Single Origin as espresso

For espresso, start with a fine grind and a recipe that builds enough body and sweetness. Taste the espresso without milk first. You are looking for a round cup in which chocolate, brown sugar and hazelnut remain recognisable. If the espresso tastes bitter or burnt, grind a little coarser, shorten the extraction or reduce the extraction. If it tastes sour, thin or underdeveloped, try a slightly finer grind or a longer extraction.

Some machines need a longer ratio or a different dose to bring the coffee into balance. There is therefore no universal setting that works for every espresso machine. The review experiences underline why you should change one variable at a time when dialling in a new coffee.

Colombia Single Origin as cappuccino or lungo

Thanks to its creamy body and full flavour profile, this coffee remains recognisable in a cappuccino or latte macchiato. The chocolate and brown sugar notes work well with milk, while the hazelnut gives the drink a rounded impression. For a lungo, you can let the espresso run a little longer, but avoid over-extracting it. An overly long extraction can make the finish drier and more bitter.

Colombia Single Origin as filter coffee, cafetière or moka pot

This coffee also expresses its origin clearly as filter coffee. Use a medium grind, clean water and change one variable at a time. A slightly finer grind or higher dose gives more body; a slightly coarser grind can make the cup lighter and more transparent.

For a cafetière, use a coarse grind and allow enough contact time. In a moka pot, the coffee's firm, sweet character comes forward clearly. This also appears in the review experiences: coffee drinkers who enjoy a powerful morning coffee often appreciate this bean especially in a moka pot.

Who is this coffee suitable for?

Colombia Single Origin is a good choice if you are looking for a freshly roasted specialty coffee with a full, creamy body, a sweet finish and clear notes of chocolate, brown sugar and hazelnut. It suits you if you use several brewing methods at home and want one coffee that works for espresso, milk drinks, filter and moka pot.

This coffee is less obvious if you are specifically looking for a very light, delicate or low-acidity coffee, or if your espresso machine gives you very little room to adjust grind and recipe. In that case, another coffee may suit your equipment or taste preference better.

What is Specialty Coffee ?

Specialty coffee is coffee of exceptionally high quality, with unique flavors and aromas. It is produced with attention to detail and craftsmanship, from the harvest of the coffee cherries to the roasting and brewing process. It requires carefully selected and processed coffee beans of the highest quality and is often produced by
small-scale producers who focus on sustainability and fair trade.

Where does Colombia Single Origin come from?

This coffee comes from Finca La Morelia in the municipality of Belén de Umbría, in Colombia's Risaralda region. The farm is at approximately 1,600 metres. The available product information lists Castillo as the variety, washed processing and an SCA score of 85. Read our article about Belén de Umbría and Risaralda for more regional context.

What do coffee drinkers say about this Colombian coffee?

In the review analysis we collected, many coffee drinkers appreciate the full, creamy and sweet flavour and describe the coffee as suitable for espresso, cappuccino, lungo and moka pot. Some tasters also report bitterness, acidity or a burnt impression on their specific machine. That difference underlines how strongly grind, recipe and machine affect the final cup.

Is Colombia Single Origin suitable for an espresso machine or fully automatic machine?

Yes. This coffee works well as espresso and is also suitable for many fully automatic machines. It will not automatically be balanced on every machine, so start with a fixed recipe and adjust grind and brew time. If the cup is bitter, grind a little coarser or shorten the extraction; if it is sour or thin, try a finer grind or a longer extraction. Our coffee bean guide can help.

How should I dial in Colombia Single Origin as espresso?

Start with a fine espresso grind and taste the espresso without milk. Look for chocolate, brown sugar and hazelnut in a round, sweet cup. If the coffee tastes bitter or burnt, grind a little coarser, shorten the brew time or reduce extraction. If it tastes sour, thin or underdeveloped, grind a little finer or extend the extraction. Change one variable at a time.

Can I use this coffee for filter coffee, cafetière and moka pot?

Yes. A medium grind works well for filter coffee; a finer grind or higher dose gives more body. For a cafetière, use a coarse grind and enough contact time. In a moka pot, the firm, sweet character comes through clearly. You can order whole beans or choose the grind that matches your method.

Does this coffee work well in cappuccino and other milk drinks?

Yes. The creamy body and notes of chocolate and brown sugar remain recognizable when you add milk, so the coffee works well in cappuccino and latte macchiato. Taste the espresso before adding milk so you can dial in the extraction first.

What does Single Origin mean for this coffee?

Single Origin means that the coffee comes from one clearly defined origin rather than a blend of different countries or regions. This coffee can be traced to Finca La Morelia in Belén de Umbría. Read our explanation of Single Origin coffee beans for more background.

What do Castillo, washed and SCA score 85 mean?

Castillo is the listed coffee variety. Washed means that the fruit is removed before the beans are dried and the coffee is washed processed. An SCA score of 85 is a professional quality assessment that places the coffee in the specialty segment; it does not predict exactly how every drinker will experience it.

When should I choose a different coffee instead of Colombia Single Origin?

Choose this coffee when you want a full, creamy and sweet Colombian coffee that works across several brewing methods. If you want to explore another Colombian region, compare it with Colombia Supremo from Huila. If you are looking for coffee without caffeine, consider Colombia Sugarcane Decaf or the decaf collection. Your taste and the adjustment range of your machine remain decisive.
